How You Can Support Breast Cancer Awareness - (2023)

Every October, the world wears pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

It is an annual international health campaign organized by leading breast cancer organizations in the United States with the aim of raising funds for research into the causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of the disease. Pro athletes are trading in their team colors for pink gear, and stores are flooding their shelves and websites with pink items.

In accordance withNational Breast Cancer Foundation, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime and it is projected that in 2021 there will be 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer and 43,600 deaths from breast cancer from breast cancer alone.

While the coronavirus pandemic has slowed in-person events and fundraisers, there are still many ways you can support breast cancer awareness, research, and treatment through donations, volunteering, learning, and sharing educational resources with other women.

Breast cancer treatment and research for all women

The annual statistics are worrying, but the mortality from breast cancerrates have fallen40% from 1989 to 2016, according to the American Cancer Society. The organization credits this to early detection and stresses the importance of raising awareness of this disease and supporting organizations that help all people get the care they need.

However, mortality rates are not declining equally across all ethnic demographic groups. Although white women are slightly more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than black women, white women are less likely to die from the disease. Between 2013 and 2017, breast cancer mortality was 39% higher in black women than in white womenSusana G. Comment. Additionally, black women are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age and with more aggressive types of breast cancer than white women, according to the organization.

A review of studies published by the Susan G. Komen organizationdescribes the three main causes of inequalities in breast cancer as differences in tumor biology, genomics (e.g. the rate of inherited gene mutations) and standards of care (including barriers to treatment and inequalities in the quality of attention).

Avoid "pink wash" marketing tactics

The fact that an item for sale has a pink ribbon does not necessarily mean that the purchase actually benefits breast cancer research. The term "pinkwashing" in this context refers to claims by a company that it supports breast cancer programs when its contributions to a breast cancer charity are not directly linked to consumer purchases.

"There's a multitude of companies that are doing this and aren't transparent about how they make money for the cause and what the consumer is doing to influence the cause," said Lisa Giuroiu, vice president of corporate partnerships at Susan G. Komen. .

If you're unsure whether a company will actually convert your donation to a breast cancer charity (or the company won't tell you which breast cancer organizations receive the money), you can make a direct donation. instead to a cancer charity.

only know the waves

It can be difficult to tell if you're donating to a reputable organization. Breast cancer charities are no exception. groups likecharity clockmiCharity-BrowserThey're great resources when you're unsure whether the nonprofit you're trying to donate to is the best.

According to Charity Navigator, it is best to research how much of a charity's total spending is spent on programs or services before donating online. A reputable breast cancer charity should spend about 75% on programs and services. Ideally, no more than 25% of administrative expenses should be used for general expenses, including hiring and paying employees.

Here are some of the most respected breast cancer charities, according to Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy:

Other ways to contribute to breast cancer research

For many Americans, budgeting for cash donations is not a good option right now. But that doesn't mean you can't get involved in other ways and support women's health.

attend events

Organizations like Susan G. Komen and the American Cancer Society often hold in-person fundraisers throughout the month of October to raise awareness and support for the cause. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic last year, they switched many meetings to virtual events.

This year, organizations are offering a mix of options so people can participate however they feel comfortable. For example, Susan G. Komen is a hostessFace to face and virtual walks/runsin cities across the country.

"The beauty of the card is that you are making a donation to Komen and at the same time the consumer is getting their own money back," Giuroiu said.

You can earn 3% in the category of your choice (gas, online shopping, restaurants, travel, pharmacy or DIY & furniture), plus 2% rebate at grocery stores and wholesale clubs and 1% rebate on other purchases. For each new card used in an open transaction during the first 90 days, Susan G. Komen earns $3 and 0.08% off all retail purchases. The organization will also receive $3 for each renewal of a card that has been in good standing during the 12-month period and does not have a zero balance at the time of renewal.

Since 2009, Susan G. Komen has received more than $10.3 million from this Bank of America program.

"From a credit card perspective, this is one way people can do something very, very simple to join the fight and help find the cures they need," says Giuroiu. “Everyone has the ability to impact and save lives. Everyone can be part of the solution.”

Purchasing Gift Certificates for Charity:if you have oneTarjeta American Express with membership rewardsor a Wells Fargo cardGoFar Rewards, you can use your rewards to buy a charity gift card for JustGiving or CharityChoice. Both programs work with many different organizations, including those focused on breast cancer research and advocacy.

Hotel and airline donations:Many hotel and airline loyalty programs offer the opportunity to donate your points and miles to a select group of organizations. Opportunities are often limited, but some programs may organize breast cancer awareness campaigns in October. See Your Preferred Loyalty Program for more information.

the bottom line

According to Giuroiu, there is still work to be done, and it goes way beyond wearing pink.

"It seems that there has been complacency about breast cancer and the urgency has eased somewhat," adds Giuroiu. “From our point of view, that is not correct. Breast cancer kills people. We find that absolutely unacceptable."
